Recently, Andy Anderson, our Director of Vocational Services, reflected on two community-based events that beautifully highlighted the talents and growth of our BHMA participants: the Holyoke/Chicopee DDS Office Art Show and the South Hadley Players’ presentation of The Wizard of Oz.
At The Wizard of Oz, Adam Shipp and Pam Roberts delivered memorable performances, while Jeremy Swartz shone in his lead role as the Tinman. Former BHMA participant Mario Bonavita also joined the cast, earning laughs and applause from the audience. Andy noted that what struck him most wasn’t just their talent—it was how seamlessly they blended into the production. "If I hadn’t known them personally, I would never have guessed these individuals had any disabilities," he reflected.
He was especially moved by their interactions with his daughter, who was also in the production. She shared how kind and supportive they were, helping her build confidence in her roles. It was also wonderful to see many BHMA participants in the audience, embracing the expectations of typical theater-goers. Andy observed, “Our Variety Hour programming is such a powerful tool for teaching these skills, and seeing that education come to life in real time was heartwarming.”
The Holyoke/Chicopee DDS Art Show brought similar feelings. Several BHMA artists displayed and sold their work, showcasing their creativity and confidence in a bustling community setting. Connor Thompson professionally captured the event as the photographer, and the BHMA "Jazzers" delivered a standout performance, impressing attendees with their polished music and professionalism.
Reflecting on both events, Andy remarked, “BHMA wasn’t the focal point, but we were ‘in the air.’ The lessons, the teaching—all of it was evident in these moments, and it’s a realization of the principles this program was founded upon. It sure felt like we’re doing something right.”
